A real town, not a resort strip

Phuket Town, properly Mueang Phuket, is where the island actually runs its business: the ferries leave from here, the hospitals and the government offices sit here, and the big supermarkets are on its outskirts rather than tucked behind a beach road. Visitors who only see Patong or Kata often skip it entirely, which is a mistake if you are driving yourself, because the town is also the cheapest place to base a stay and it puts you within reach of every coast on the island rather than just one of them.

The part everyone means when they say "Old Town" is the Sino-Portuguese shophouse quarter around Thalang Road, with Soi Romanee running off it. These streets were built for foot traffic and ox carts, not for a rented sedan, and a good number of them run one way. On Sunday evenings Thalang Road itself closes to cars for the walking street market, so a car parked there is a car you cannot move until the market packs up. None of that is a problem if you treat the town the way locals do: park once, then walk.

A car still earns its keep here. Phuket Town sits close to Rassada Pier, the departure point for Phi Phi, Krabi and Koh Lanta ferries, and it is roughly central to the airport, Patong and the southern capes, which a beach hotel simply is not. This page covers where to leave the car once you have parked it, how the Sunday market changes the plan, and what collecting or returning a car at Rassada actually involves.

What a car actually gives you from a town base

Rassada in minutes

The pier for Phi Phi, Krabi and Koh Lanta ferries sits a short drive east of the town centre, which matters if part of your trip is by boat rather than by plane.

Hotel delivery is realistic

Around 170 to 190 cars deliver to Phuket Town, so a supplier meeting you at your guesthouse rather than the airport is a normal booking, not a special request.

Central to everywhere

The airport, Patong and the southern capes are all thirty to forty five minutes out, which a single beach base on either coast cannot offer.

Cheaper to sleep in

Rooms in town cost noticeably less than the same standard on a beach road, and the saving covers a rental with plenty left over.

Parking the Old Town without a headache

Treat the shophouse grid as a place to arrive at, not a place to drive through. These are the practical points a first time visitor needs.

On the street

Metered bays
The main town streets carry metered parking, paid by the hour rather than the day.
Shophouse frontages
Never block one. Many are still homes or working shops, not photo backdrops.
One way streets
Several run one direction only, so a wrong turn near Thalang Road can mean a long loop back.

At the malls

Free parking
The larger malls on the town's edge offer free parking and are a short walk or ride from Thalang Road.
Leave it, then walk
Phuket Town is compact enough to cover on foot once the car is parked for the day.
Sunday evenings
Thalang Road closes to traffic for the walking street market, so plan your parking before it starts.

Getting out again

To the airport
About 45 minutes north on Route 402.
To Patong
About 30 minutes west over the hill.
To Chalong and the south
25 to 40 minutes, depending on the cape.

Collecting a car at Rassada after a ferry

  1. 1

    Book before you land

Set the pier as your pickup point when you reserve. About 128 cars deliver to Rassada, so it is a real option rather than an afterthought.

  2. 2

    Clear the pier

Boats from Phi Phi, Krabi and Koh Lanta dock here, and the walk off the jetty is short. Your voucher gives a name and a phone number to look for.

  3. 3

    Walk the car

Photograph the panels and check the fuel level against the paperwork before you sign, the same as any other handover point on the island.

  4. 4

    Drive into town first

The centre is a few minutes away, which makes Rassada a sensible place to start a stay based in Phuket Town rather than doubling back to the airport.

Fleet board

The board redraws on every filter change. Totals cover the whole rental.

Phuket Town, answered

Use the metered bays on the main streets for a short stop, or the free parking at the malls on the edge of town if you plan to stay a few hours. Whatever you choose, avoid blocking a shophouse frontage and expect to walk the last stretch, since much of the quarter is narrow and one way.

Yes. Thalang Road closes to cars for the evening market, and the side streets around it get busy with foot traffic well before the barriers go up. Park before the afternoon on a Sunday, or plan to leave the car outside the immediate quarter that day.

Yes. Around 128 cars in the local fleet deliver to Rassada, so setting the pier as your pickup point when you book is straightforward if you are arriving from Phi Phi, Krabi or Koh Lanta by boat.

Often, yes. Rooms in Phuket Town cost less than an equivalent beach hotel, and a car erases the distance disadvantage, putting the airport, Patong and the southern capes all within thirty to forty five minutes.

About 45 minutes north on Route 402 in normal traffic. Add extra time if you are leaving during the morning or evening peak, when the town itself and the Thalang stretch further north get congested.
