The daily rate moves more than the car does

On Phuket the biggest swing in what you pay per day has almost nothing to do with which car you pick. It comes from when you travel and how long you keep the keys. A Toyota Yaris booked for three nights in January and the same Yaris booked for two weeks in July can sit at genuinely different daily prices, and neither number tells you anything about the car itself.

  1. 1

Pick a window outside December to February

That stretch is when the island fills up and every supplier's board tightens. Move a booking into the shoulder months either side, or into the May to October window, and the same compact reprices downward without you doing anything else.

  2. 2

Skip the three day booking if you can

A short hire is the worst value on the board, day for day, because the supplier has to turn the car around fast and prices it accordingly. A full week is a noticeably better daily rate, and a longer stay again is better still.

  3. 3

Let fuel stay a small line item

Petrol here is cheap and the island is only around 50 km end to end, so even a week of driving north to south and back barely dents the total next to the rental itself. It is not where the savings need to come from.

  4. 4

    Set the dates, then compare

The search above reprices live as you change the length of stay. Try three days against seven for the same car and watch the per day figure move before you read a single review.

What a cheap week here actually looked like

Read all reviews
"Booked a Yaris for ten days in June and the daily figure was lower than the three day quote I'd got for the same car in January."
FL Freya Lindqvist Malmo, Sweden
"Two of us worked out the taxi runs between Patong and Kata would have cost more than the Vios did for the whole day, and we did four of those runs."
CW Conor Whelan Cork, Ireland
"Didn't expect the cheap option to be an automatic. Back home the automatic is always the expensive upgrade, here it was just what was on the list."
IV Ingrid Voss Hamburg, Germany

Three things that set the price you see

None of these are marketing tricks. They are simply how the Phuket market prices a car, and knowing them changes which dates you pick more than which model you pick.

Season

December to February
Dry, busy, and the most expensive window on the board.
May to October
The monsoon months bring afternoon rain, and with it a markedly cheaper rate for the same car.
Shoulder weeks
The weeks either side of the peak often price closer to low season than to high.

Length of hire

Three days
The weakest daily rate on the whole board, regardless of car class.
One week
A clear step down in the per day figure compared with a short hire.
Two weeks or more
Better again, which is why long staying visitors rarely pay the headline daily number.

What's in the rate

Included
The car, insurance cover and unlimited island driving are standard across almost every listing here.
Extra if you want it
A baby seat, a second driver or delivery to an address off the main roads can carry a small add on.
Not extra
No Deposit is available on a good number of cars, and free cancellation is common enough to filter for.

A day that shows what you're really comparing against

The honest comparison for a cheap Phuket rental is not another rental desk, it is the cost of getting around without one. Here is one ordinary day for two people staying in Patong.

  1. 09:00

Patong to Kata for the morning

A metered taxi or a negotiated fare each way adds up fast over the hill road, and that is before the return trip in the evening.

  2. 12:30

Lunch, then on to Phuket Town

A third taxi leg to see the Old Town shophouses is a third fare, and drivers waiting on you to browse rarely come cheap.

  3. 16:00

Back to Patong for the evening

Fare number four. Stack the whole day of taxi legs together and the total for two people commonly clears what a Yaris or a Mazda 2 costs for the entire day, tank included.

  4. Any time

    Or the scooter version

A scooter is cheaper for one rider on dry roads, but for two people, or luggage, or the wet months, the maths flips back toward the car well before the rain does.

Questions about keeping the price down

Through the May to October monsoon months, when demand drops and suppliers price to keep their fleet moving. December to February is the opposite: dry, busy and the most expensive stretch of the year.

It helps more with availability than with price in low season, because there is little pressure on the board. In the December to February window it matters a great deal, since the cheaper compacts in the automatic class are the first to go.

Local demand simply runs that way. Manual is almost absent from the fleet here, so the everyday compact you would expect to be a manual back home is an automatic on this island, at no extra cost.

Usually not once you add a second rider, wet weather or any real luggage. A scooter wins for one person on short, dry hops. For two people covering the island, a small automatic tends to cost about the same as the day of taxi fares it replaces, and it is drier and safer besides.

The car, standard insurance cover and unlimited driving across the island are included in almost every listing. A baby seat, an additional driver or delivery to an address off the main roads can carry a small charge, which the listing states before you book.
