Handle the Kathu hill with care, park once near Bangla Road, then use the car for everywhere else.
The hill on your own terms
The Kathu hill road is the main way in and out of Patong, and it is steep with tight bends both ways. In your own car you set the pace, drop a gear on the way down and stop at the viewpoint if you want to. A taxi does not wait for that.
The car comes to your hotel
Between 170 and 190 cars deliver to Phuket hotels in Patong, so there is no reason to travel north to the airport just to start a rental. A car on day two, once you have settled in, is a very common pattern here.
A base for the rest of the island
Patong itself is walkable. The car earns its keep the moment you want a quieter beach, the Big Buddha road, the southern capes or a day away from the crowd.
Automatic by default
462 of the 468 cars in a typical week here are automatic, which suits a hill start and stop and copes with the busy crawl along Rat-U-Thit Road in the early evening.

Book with hotel delivery
Choose your hotel as the meeting point when you book, and skip the trip north to the airport entirely. The owner brings the car to you at the time you set.
Settle in first
A lot of visitors take a taxi or a hotel transfer on arrival day and have the car delivered on day two once bags are unpacked and the first walk to the beach is done.
Walk the car at the kerb
Photograph every panel and the fuel gauge before you sign, the same as you would at any handover point. It takes a few minutes and settles any question later.
Park once for the night
If you are heading out to Bangla Road, use the hotel's parking or Jungceylon and leave the car for the evening. Walking beats hunting for a second space on a narrow soi.
Take the hill in daylight when you can
For a day trip over to Phuket Town or beyond, leave a little earlier than the distance suggests. The Kathu climb rewards a low gear and no rush, especially if rain has just passed through.
Patong does not need a car for its own sake. Bangla Road, Jungceylon and the whole stretch of Patong Beach Road are close enough together that most of a stay happens on foot, and a car parked outside a hotel for three straight nights is not wasted money, it is just resting until the plan changes. Where it stops resting is the first morning someone wants a beach that is not this one, or a look at the Big Buddha road above Chalong, or a full day at Promthep Cape watching the sunset from the south end of the island rather than the busy west coast.
That is also why the hill road matters more here than almost anywhere else on Phuket. Every trip that starts from Patong and does not stay on the coast has to climb out through Kathu first, and the climb is the same whether you are heading to Phuket Town for the day or further south to Chalong and beyond. Treat it with a bit of respect: a small, underpowered car loaded with four adults and their luggage will feel it on the way up, and the way down asks for a low gear rather than a light touch on the brakes, especially once the afternoon rain has passed through. Get that one stretch right and the rest of a self drive stay out of Patong is straightforward.
It is the one stretch that deserves your full attention. The Kathu climb is steep with tight bends in both directions, and it is worse in heavy rain. Take it slowly, drop a gear on the way down and give yourself more time than the distance suggests, and it stops feeling difficult within a couple of trips.
Use your hotel's parking or the parking at Jungceylon and walk from there. Beach Road is busy and the side sois are narrow, so parking once and walking is the right call rather than hunting for a spot closer to the action. Never leave a car blocking a shopfront.
Yes. Between 170 and 190 cars deliver to Patong hotels, so there is no need to collect at the airport at all. A common pattern is a taxi transfer on arrival day, then the rental car delivered on day two once you have settled in.
Not for Patong itself. Bangla Road, Jungceylon and the beach are all walkable. The car earns its keep the moment you want a quieter beach, the Big Buddha road, the southern capes or a day off the island altogether.
Budget around 50 minutes from Patong to the airport in normal daylight traffic, longer if you are travelling in the early evening peak or in heavy rain on the hill. Build in a margin rather than cutting it close.
